Description

About the tour

Experience the spectacular landscape of Þórsmörk through hiking, delicious food, and a relaxed atmosphere. Take in the fresh mountain air nestled in Þórsmörk valley between three different glaciers and a rough and rugged, yet gentle landscape. You will be guided through excellent hikes, enjoy delicious local food, and escape the city life in this unique camping experience.

Moderate hikes and delicious Icelandic food in the scenic nature of Þórsmörk. This tour is ideal for people who want to enjoy being in nature, hiking, and eating good food. People who want to slow down and enjoy being out of the city and taking in the fresh mountain air.

There are June departures, which is perfect for hiking in that area, and too early to hike the Laugavegur tour and Fimmvörðuháls due to too much snow (usually). As well as August departures.

Þórsmörk is a valley nestled in between three glaciers. Surrounded by rugged, yet majestic mountains, glaciers, and glacial-fed rivers.

It has native birch trees, small birds, freshwater streams and fantastic hikes. It has an almost magical nature and offers outdoor enthusiasts a great opportunity to explore, be active, take in nature and relax.

Named after the Thor, God of thunder and son of Odin in Norse mythology. The place feels supernatural and magical. Stories of elves, trolls and ghosts are plentiful in the area.

I am known for serving delicious food in the mountains. I use the freshest of local ingredients to make the food perhaps as big a part of the adventure as the hikes themselves. See The 2022 Set Menu below. It is possible to get a vegetarian menu, gluten-free and more for a small extra fee.

Having this 3-day trip means we get to relax and take in the nature much better, rather than being in a hurry for two days. We have to take into count that it takes 4 hours to get to Þórsmörk from Reykjavík.

There are no ticks, no mosquitoes, and no snakes or reptiles in Iceland.

There are countless scenic hiking routes in the Þórsmörk area. Here is the outline of which hikes we might be going to. Keep in mind that depending on weather, the group and other factors we might take different hikes. Sometimes it might even be preferred to hike two shorter hikes in a day.

Below you can see a variation of these hikes.

The Menu:

I pride myself on cooking with as many local Icelandic ingredients as I can. I put a lot of effort into making the menu and cooking the food.

Food allergies & Special diets
I am capable of catering to most special dietary requirements. My girlfriend is vegetarian with gluten intolerance, and she has come up with plenty of delicious dishes that I would often even choose over regular dishes. I am constantly trying to push my cooking skills and am seeking out new flavor profiles. Please distinguish between intolerances and allergies. It takes me lots of time and effort to modify the menu for special dietary requirements as well and it ends up costing more to cater. I pride myself on being flexible with food options. This means that there is a surcharge for special dietary needs of a total of 30€. Please note that I am not able to cater to anaphylaxis (severe food allergies) and celiac disease at this point. Due to complications, we use the same cooking utensils as other people. I am sorry about that, hopefully, soon this will change.

Réttarfell – Einstígur – Álfakirkja

The hike starts on flat as we hike over the ever-changing glacial river Króssá. Polished obsidian and other types of volcanic basalt is on the riverbed. There are bridges to cross the glacial river. The hike up Réttarfell mountain is scenic with a great overview of the whole area. With Eyjafjallajökull glacier to the south and M‎ýrdalsjökull to the east. A stunning overview of the whole valley with a view to the north into the Icelandic highland. Choice of a ridge for the way back which is more scenic or going down a valley and making a loop.

  • Hiking Distance: Approx. 5 km (3 miles)
  • Elevation Gain: 260 m (850 ft)

Tindfjallahringur – Rjúpnafell – Útigönguhöfði

We start by going up forested area, not really forested to any standard except Icelandic standards. The trail goes towards Trolla Kirkja (Troll’s Church), Goes around Tindfjöll (Peaky Mountains) and ends with an overview cliff called Útigönguhöfði. Where Mýrdalsjökull glacier can be seen and often heard through the valleys as icebergs fall off cliffs and echo through the valley.

Rjúpnafell (Mount Ptarmigan) can be added to this trail to get a fantastic 360° of the area and the three glaciers around. As it is steep to go to the top this part will be evaluated with every group.

  • Hiking Distance: Approx. 8 km (5 miles)
  • With Rjúpnafell Approx. 10 km (6 miles)
  • Elevation Gain: 300 m (1000 ft)
  • With Rjúpnafell Approx. 500 m

Valahnúkur

A small mountain with diverse fauna and flowers. While it is small it makes for a really nice hike for the last day. We will make it into a loop hike, go up and over Valahnúkur, check out Snorraríki Cave and either take the longer route or go to Sönghellir cave as well. On top of Valahnúkur, you can see the texture of Eyjafjallajökull glacier, beautiful shades of blue and black. Parts of the eruption from 2010 can also be seen from that 360° panorama viewpoint.

On this camping trip, we will have a spacious kitchen tent for up to 10 guests and one guide. Where some of the finest ingredients you can find in Iceland will be served in a style of homecooked food in the mountains.

It takes four hours to reach Þórsmörk and we will be going by a scheduled bus. The busses are modified to be able to drive through rivers, and we will drive through many different glacial-fed rivers during the last hour of the drive.

Þórsmörk is a true adventurer’s paradise where we will enjoy delicious food and take in the calm nature.

Base-camp Trip

This is a base camp trip meaning that we will set up camp on one spot and explore from there. We don’t have to repack every day.

Each person is responsible for putting up their tent. I can assist if needed. Each person is responsible for loading the bus with their bags and to take their bag out of the bus.
